Warmth

Tog Rating Explained

Tog is the amount of heat/ warmth a quilt can trap- the higher the tog rating, the warmer the quilt will be. You may find you need different duvets, with different tog ratings, for different times of the year.

There are 3 main tog weights:

4.5 tog: Lightweight and best suited for summer
10.5:  Midweight and suited for spring or autumn, but can be comfortably used all year round
13.5: Very warm for cold winter nights or particularly cold houses

Construction

A duvet is made up of a filling and a casing.  There are a variety of fillings to choose from depending on your requirements, the main differences are between natural fillings and synthetic ones.

Choosing between natural and synthetic is a matter of preference and which best suits your needs. Natural fillings tend to be more expensive but last longer, whereas synthetic fillings are more practical and good for allergy sufferers.

When choosing your sheeting you need to consider the size of the bed you are buying for, whether you want a fitted or flat sheet and what kind of material you would like. This section will help you by explaining the terminology so you can find a sheet that fits.

Fitted or Flat?

Fitted: Fitted sheets are constructed to fit over your mattress snugly with their elasticised corners, making them easy to put on. They can be put over or underneath mattress protectors or toppers according to your preference.

Flat: Flat sheets are larger than your bed and more versatile. They do not have elastic corners so can be folded over your mattress or used as a top sheet.

Thread Count Explained Thread count refers to the number of threads per square inch of fabric. A higher thread count is considered better quality, a higher thread count results in a sheet that is more comfortable and softer to the touch.

Percale Collection All our percale sheets have a thread count of 180 or higher in a plain weave construction . They can be made of 100% cotton or a cotton blend, and are an excellent option if you want a more luxurious sheet.

Below you will find information about the different materials that go into making our bedding fillings, casings and sheeting. Discover the benefits of natural and synthetic fibres and learn more about the properties of the materials we use.

Natural Synthetic

Down: Down is the lightest of all the fillings with  fluffy clusters that make it feel luxuriously soft. It contains thousands of tiny air pockets which offer excellent natural insulation, keeping cold air out and warm air in.

Feathers: Feathers are graded from superfine to a medium grade, superfine being light and fluffy and medium allowing more texture and firmness. Like down they have all the natural properties of insulation and comfort.

Egyptian cotton: From the Egyptian cotton plant, the length of the fibre is longer, finer and more luxurious than regular cotton.

Cotton: From the cotton plant, the fibres are naturally soft and breathable

Cotton/ Polyester blends: Combine the softness and breathability of cotton with the easy care properties of polyester.

Hollowfibre: Hollowfibre polyester is very light, allowing the air within its core to become warm and therefore retain heat.

Microfibre: Polyester One of the finest of synthetic fibres which is very soft to the touch whilst offering insulation and breathability. It is the closest you can get to a natural fibre feel.

Memory Foam: A heat sensitive material that can acquire the shape of the body lying upon it.

Polyester: A synthetic fibre that is strong, durable, easy to wash and resistant to shrinking and creasing

TECHONOLOGIST'S TIP: All our natural and synthetic duvets and pillows are fully washable in a large capacity machine
